Kevin Mbabu has joined BSC Young Boys on a season-long loan from Newcastle, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Newcastle’s official website and Twitter account revealed that the 21-year-old full-back would join the Swiss giants on loan for the 2016-17 season.
The versatile defender, who can play on either flank, joins the Swiss Super League club in search of first team experience and more game time, as he was not in Rafa Benitez’s plans for the new Championship season.
The youngster now returns to his native Switzerland for the season, where he has made just one full appearance for his former club Servette.
Mbabu joined Newcastle in 2013 from Servette, but had to wait until September 2015 for his first team debut, when he featured as a substitute in a League Cup clash against Sheffield Wednesday.
He made his Premier League bow in the same week, appearing in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at St. James’ Park.
The young defender, who has a total of five first team appearances to his name, signed a two-year contract extension with the club earlier this summer.
Mbabu was also loaned out to Rangers in 2015, but failed to make any first team appearances for the club.
