Tottenham have signed goalkeeper Pau Lopez on a season-long loan from Espanyol, it was announced on Wednesday evening.

Spurs announced the arrival of the Spain Under-21 international on their official website and Twitter account on deadline day, just hours before the 11pm closure of the transfer window.

Lopez will provide competition to established White Hart Lane number one Hugo Lloris and his deputy Michel Vorm.

The Evening Standard reported that Spurs will pay £500,000 for the goalkeeper’s loan until the end of the season and have an option to sign him permanently at the end of his spell for £6million.

The 21-year-old has risen through the ranks of the La Liga side and has made 48 appearances for their first team since his full debut in 2014. Prior to that he played 35 times for Espanyol B.

Lopez has also been capped at Under-21 level by Spain and was named in the senior squad for a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this year.

The goalkeeper, who will wear the number 30 shirt at White Hart Lane, is also a familiar figure to Mauricio Pochettino from the manager’s time in Barcelona.

Lopez made 38 appearances for the La Liga club in all competitions last term, as he conceded 74 goals, which included seven clean sheets.

In other Tottenham transfer news, a finale has been reached in their deadline pursuit of a La Liga ace.
