Eddie Gray has hailed the influence of Leeds defender Pontus Jansson following the 2-0 victory over Birmingham on Tuesday night.
The Whites continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought home win in the Championship which saw them rise to the top of the league table.
Samu Saiz continued his dream start to his Elland Road career with a first-half goal, while Stuart Dallas also netted a late striker to secure three points.
However, a lot of the spotlight was the on the Leeds back-line as they were put under pressure from a strong Birmingham outfit.
Thomas Christiansen’s defence managed to keep them out and have now recorded six consecutive clean sheets in the league.
Powerhouse centre-back Jansson has played a major role in their success and the only time Leeds conceded this season was when he was suspended on the opening day against Bolton.
Gray has highlighted the importance of the 26-year-old and feels he is a positive impact on his team-mates.
“I thought the boys at the back played tremendously well,” Gray told LUTV. “They’ve done it all season actually, when you think the only league goal they’ve conceded is against Bolton and Pontus Jansson wasn’t playing there. He is a big influence on the players at the back I feel.”
Leeds are now sat at the summit of the table and their mean defence has played a big role so far this season.
They have conceded just two goals in their opening seven games and allowed their attacking talents to flourish in the final third.
Jansson has formed a solid partnership alongside Liam Cooper in the heart of the defence, while Luke Ayling and Vurnon Anita have been the preferred full-backs.
In other Leeds United news, the club’s supporters reacted on Twitter to Ezgjan Alioski’s performance against Birmingham.
