Former England international forward and ESPN pundit Paul Mariner has tipped Liverpool to beat Leeds in Tuesday evening’s EFL Cup clash at Anfield.
The Championship outfit are preparing to take on Jurgen Klopp’s in form Reds team in the quarter-final stage of the competition.
Mariner claimed that despite Klopp’s injury problems and the need to rotate, the Premier League team will still earn a victory on their own turf.
“Back in the day this was massive, not so massive now,” told Mariner to ESPN. ” Leeds are in fifth place in the Championship, going well. Liverpool have so many injuries in the forward line. Klopp will have to rotate, will have to see how deep his squad is, but I still think that they have got enough at home.”
Liverpool will be without forward trio Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana for the encounter.
Lallana, 28, suffered a groin injury while playing for England and has not featured in the Reds’ last two matches.
Meanwhile, Sturridge missed the Sunderland clash at the weekend with a “minor calf strain.”
However, it was the injury to star attacker Coutinho which worried fans the most as he left the encounter against the Black Cats in the first half on a stretcher.
The Brazil international had a scan on the ankle injury on Monday with results suggesting he could be on the sidelines for “five or six weeks.”
Leeds will see the injuries to the forward trio as a huge boost to their chances of going through to the semi-finals.
However, the Reds will be keen to win their first piece of silverware under Klopp and will prove difficult opposition.
