Sampdoria are ready to table a £9million offer for Arsenal outcast Jack Wilshere, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims the Serie A club are hoping to bring the 25-year-old central midfielder to Italy this summer and are ready to splash a seven-figure fee on him.
However, it is said Sampdoria are worried that their potential £9million bid will not be enough to prise Wilshere away from North London.
The report states Sampdoria had previously made an enquiry over the England international’s availability.
Despite being a mainstay in the Gunners’ midfield, injuries over the past few seasons have hampered his development, and he spent last term farmed out on loan to Bournemouth.
The Englishman made 27 appearances across all competitions for the Cherries, and was one of their most consistent performers.
He broke into the first team at the Emirates in the summer of 2008, and he has since played 160 league and cup games, which have yielded 12 goals and 24 assists.
Football Insider verdict
Wilshere’s contract at the Emirates comes to an end next summer, and Wenger may be keen to offload him this summer to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer of 2018. A £9million transfer fee could represent a bargain for Sampdoria if he rediscovers his form, but it is also a big investment in a player who has traditionally struggled with injuries. Time outside of the Premier League may be best for Wilshere and his career, as it would allow him to play outside the scrutiny of the English game. It is likely the Gunners would prefer a loan deal, so they still ultimately control the 25-year-old’s future.
