Everton and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to a report.

The Mirror claim that the two Premier League sides are set to face each other as they look to secure the signature of the highly-rated star.

The duo are also involved in a battle for 25-year-old Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

It is claimed that Everton are currently leading the chase for Carvalho, but Chelsea also have the 24-year-old Portugal international on their shortlist, after struggling to land Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan.

Carvalho only signed a new Sporting contract earlier in the year which keeps him at the club until 2020, and the club inserted a £35million release clause into the deal.

The 24-year-old helped Portugal lift the Euro 2016 trophy earlier in the summer, as he played the full 120 minutes in a 1-0 victory over hosts France.

Carvalho played a prominent role in this summer’s tournament for Portugal, starting five of the seven games.

The player burst on to the International stage at the Under-21s European Championships last summer, where he was named as the Player of the tournament for his solid performances.

The midfield powerhouse rose through the Sporting ranks as a youth player and has been a main figure during the last three seasons, after loan spells at Fatima and Circle Brugge as a youngster.

In other Everton transfer news, Manchester City have re-opened talks to sign John Stones from the Toffees.
