Everton are closing in on a sensational £21million deal for Juan Mata, according to a report.
French Journalist Flora Moussy, who works for French outlet InfoSport+, has claimed on her personal Twitter account that Mata is in advanced talks to join the Merseysiders.
She said the deal is imminent for the Spain international to move to Goodison Park.
Moussy’s translated tweet read: “Juan Mata is expected soon to leave Manchester United and sign with Everton. The transfer around 25 million euros #MUFC”.
Mata has been linked heavily with a move away from Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho took over at Old Trafford, with the turbulent relationship between the two well documented. Everton were installed last week as favourites to sign the former Valencia playmaker.
The 28-year-old is not in the plans of Mourinho who sold him to United in January 2014 during his second spell at Chelsea.
The new United manager’s view of the attacking midfielder has not changed from two years ago when he regarded him as too slow to be at the heart of the attacking element of his team.
It would be regarded as a sensational coup for Everton if they could sign a United regular, one who cost £37million in January 2014.
New manager Ronald Koeman has a £100million transfer kitty at his disposal this summer.
The reliable Moussy also claimed that Ibrahimovic will take the number eight shirt, a clear sign that Mata has slipped down the pecking order as it was his number in the 2015-16 season.
She tweeted: “Ibrahimovic should be renumbered 8 confirming the departure of Juan Mata to Everton.”
The 28-year-old was in sparkling form for United last season, scoring 10 goals and making 11 in a defence minded side, but was left out of Spain’s Euro 2016 squad by boss Vicente Del Bosque.
Everton are reportedly in talks with Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel after hvaing a £30 million bid accepted, and have joined the race to sign Southampton and Italy striker Graziano Pelle.
In other Everton news, the Toffees want to sign this Chelsea goalkeeper.
