Ronald Koeman held his first press conference as Everton manager on Friday afternoon – and Twitter immediately erupted with fans struck by the differences between him and Roberto Martinez.
Martinez was sacked at the end of the current season following a period of discontent among Everton fans.
Koeman was in a confident frame of mind as he spoke with vigour and passion about Everton’s future, reminding Blues fans of one of the differences with Martinez.
“We have some good, young players,” Koeman said. “We had good players in the squad. I remember the 3-0 defeat against Everton with Southampton last season and everyone was surprised, but that team had really good qualities.
“To make the next step, you maybe need to shine, but we will take the time needed for that.”
The question on most Toffees’ fans’ lips was whether they could keep hold of the highly valued Romelu Lukaku.
“I haven’t spoken to Romelu. From this moment, I’m working for Everton and I will talk to several players,” Koeman said.
“Lukaku is a key player, a goalscorer, you don’t want to lose your best players. If I can do something about that, I will.”
The Dutchman also hinted of signings from former club Southampton, but chose to remain coy on the prospect of incoming transfers having already been linked with Graziano Pelle, Virgil Van Dijk and Victor Wanyama.
Koeman’s positive responses caused an immediate reaction from Everton fans on Twitter. Here are some of the messages:

Koeman is a winner. 'Win' is the buzzword. Perfect appointment when it comes to changing the club's mentality. #EFC

That smirk when someone asked Koeman if he would be raiding Southampton ? Forster incoming ??

If we keep Stones and Lukaku and don't sign any Southampton players then I'll fully get behind Koeman.
