The Everton Twitter account shared that Memphis Depay had put the Netherlands 2-1 ahead on Sunday evening, which caused fans on the social media platform to speculate.

Manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that he’s interested in the Manchester United 22-year-old, who is currently out of favour at Old Trafford.

The attacker scored two goals against Luxembourg, as Danny Blind’s men ran out 3-1 victors.

Arjen Robben scored the opening goal, which was not mentioned by the official Everton website, unlike Depay’s first.

It is unusual for a club to mention players that aren’t involved with their team on Twitter, which has caused many fans to speculate about the possible signing on social media.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Depay has made seven appearances for United under new boss Jose Mourinho this season.

However, without a goal or assist, the once bright prospect could be heading for the Old Trafford exit door.

The Netherlands international still has three years left on his contract after joining from PSV Eindhoven for £29million last summer.

It is likely that United will want to recoup a large percentage of their pay out, which could mean Koeman may look to loan the player in first.
