Romelu Lukaku is hell-bent on being the No1 player in the world, according to his manager Roberto Martinez.
The Everton spearhead extended his goal tally for the season to 19 as he scored the winner in his team’s 2-1 League Cup semi-final first leg win over Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Lukaku’s strike came almost immediately after Jesus Navas had cancelled out Ramiro Funes Mori’s first-half opener to give the Merseysiders the advantage going into the second leg at Etihad Stadium in three weeks.
Martinez gave a glowing assessment of Lukaku, 22, in the aftermath of a captivating semi-final clash.
“Romelu Lukaku has always been in our eyes the perfect striker for our team,” explained the Everton manager to Sky Sports. “That’s why we invested so heavily.
“But he is still a very young man, he’s an incredible boy to work with on a daily basis at the training ground. He wants to be the best in the world.
“You can see the way he is focused and wants to help the team and take responsibility. For a young man, it’s very impressive. It’s a joy to see him enjoying his football and scoring goals.”
Lukaku has now scored 19 for the campaign, including 15 in the Premier League to top the scoring charts alongside Jamie Vardy.
The Belgian has scored 12 times in his last 12 appearances, eight of which have come in his last seven matches at Goodison Park.
