Manchester United have made an enquiry for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

Football Insider has learned that the Premier League giants have made a move for the prolific Uruguayan as they prepare to overhaul their front line this summer.

Radamel Falcao is expected to return to Monaco when his season-long loan ends and United will listen to offers for Robin van Persie.

Of the club’s three senior strikers, only Wayne Rooney is a certainty to still be at Old Trafford at the start of next season.

Manager Louis van Gaal wants to recruit a proven spearhead at the peak of his career and Cavani has emerged as one of their leading targets.

The 28-year-old has been predominantly used in a wide forward role at PSG to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic to lead the front line.

PSG manager Laurent Blanc has admitted that Cavani’s use on the flanks is a problem for the player, and the former Napoli man has spoken of his dissatisfaction with the role.

Cavani has scored 18 goals this season but just eight of those have come in Ligue 1. By comparison, he scored 25 times for PSG last season after completing a £53million move from Napoli.

United would be prepared to pay a £30m-plus fee to capture Cavani, who has three years remaining on his PSG contract.

Juventus are also closely monitoring the forward’s situation but the Serie A champions would not be able to match the contract offer that England’s highest revenue-generating club could make.

Van Gaal wants a dynamic front man to lead the United line next season as doubts grow over the future of Van Persie, who is out of contract in 2016 and has not opened talks with the club about an extension. As revealed by Football Insider, Van Persie is willing to leave Old Trafford this summer but only if he receives a pay-off of around £2m from United.

The Premier League giants are ready to spend up to £200m to overhaul their squad in the summer, and are already working on a deal to sign winger Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.
