Exclusive: Sheffield United plot move to re-sign former player as Chris Wilder eyes January reunion

Sheffield United are keen on re-signing Birmingham City defender Jack Robinson in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Chris Wilder is pushing hard to take the 32-year-old back to Bramall Lane in the new year on loan from their Championship rivals.

Robinson departed Sheffield United at the end of the summer window after making 162 appearances in his five years at the club.

The centre-back has struggled for game-time so far in the Second City, however, that has alerted his former club ahead of January.

Sheffield United want Robinson on loan after tough start to life at Birmingham

Liverpool academy graduate Robinson helped United to two promotions from the Championship to the Premier League in both 2021 and 2023, playing a bigger part in the latter campaign.

He featured 38 times in all competitions last season after being named club captain by Wilder, but became a divisive figure among fans after some shaky performances towards the end of the campaign.

The 32-year-old signed a two-year deal with Blues on deadline day, but has only played eight times across league and cup games so far.

Robinson’s last start for Chris Davies’ side resulted in him being sent-off for a second bookable offence against Hull City on 18 October, with Phil Neumann now the manager’s preferred option next to Christoph Klarer at centre-back.

United could lose Jairo Reidewald in the January window as his contract expires

The Blades’ 2025-26 season has not gone to plan so far after they missed out on promotion last season with a loss to Sunderland in the play-off final.

Wilder’s side sit 19th in the Championship, but have enjoyed an upturn in form recently, with Dutchman Jairo Reidewald a key part of their improvements on the pitch.

The ex-Crystal Palace star has started their last five games and played well, with Football Insider recently revealing that Reidewald is a target for numerous Championship clubs as his short-term United contract expires in the new year.

Multiple clubs from Europe are also believed to be eyeing the 29-year-old’s services, but Wilder is keen to tie him down to a longer deal, so he could be linking up with Robinson if that happens and he re-joins the club soon.
