Callum McManaman is set to become Newcastle’s 12th summer signing – and supporters remember him only for his horror tackle against them three years ago.

Rory Smith, the new chief correspondent for the New York Times after leaving the Times in England, claimed on his personal Twitter account that the 25-year-old attacker will join the Magpies before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

The former Wigan winger is not held in high regard by the Magpies’ fans following his tackle on full-back Massadio Haidara back in 2013.

Although some fans are not impressed with the Magpies’ decision to sign McManaman, others are willing to look past the winger’s shocking tackle.

Here are a selection of Newcastle fans’ tweets:

One fan is so against the signing of McManaman, that he would rather sign his 44-year-old namesake, Steve.

The former Wigan Athletic winger made just 15 appearances in all competitions last term, and has fallen down the pecking order behind the likes of James McClean, Matt Phillips and youngster Jonathan Leko.

Newcastle are looking to sign a winger as Moussa Sissoko’s future hangs in the balance, while Yoann Gouffran is also expected to leave. Wide men Florian Thauvin, Remy Cabella and Andros Townsend have all quit St. James’ Park this summer.

In other Newcastle transfer news, this La Liga side are set to confirm the signing of Emmanuel Riviere.
