Gabby Agbonlahor has been told he is unlikely to play for Aston Villa again – and supporters were pleased his career at the club is finally coming to an end.
The Birmingham Mail reported on Monday morning that manager Roberto Di Matteo spoke with the club’s longest-serving player to inform him he is not part of his plans.
Agbonlahor scored only one goal last season in 18 appearances, and fans were glad that the club can get one of the club’s highest earners and underperformers out of Villa Park.
Many slated the 29-year-old’s attitude after he gave up the club captaincy last year following a series of disciplinary issues, which saw him being placed on a strict fitness regime for being unfit and overweight.
The issue of Agbonlahor’s willingness to work has been a problem for some years, with one fan stating the decision to let him go has taken five seasons too long.
As Villa supporters hope for instant promotion back to the Premier League after relegation last season, many felt Agbonlahor epitomised the team’s season in 2015-16 where they won only three games, amid fan protests over lack of interest from players and those in charge.
In what looks like Agbonlahor’s imminent exit, fans were hoping the likes of Lescott, Richards, Sanchez and Veretout can now follow suit.
Here are the reactions from supporters on Twitter.

Glad Agbonlahor is leaving #avfc, no professional athlete would get the numerous chances he has got in his time at Villa.

It's taken four years but finally 99% of fans realise how much of a mercenary and useless player Gabriel Agbonlahor is. #avfc

'Gabby Agbonlahor has been told that he is unlikely to play for Aston Villa again'. Five seasons too late IMHO.

Hopefully we get rid of Veretout, Sanchez, Agbonlahor and Lescott as minimum and make some signings. We will be fine, without a doubt #avfc

Sell Micah Richards, Lescott, Bacuna, Agbonlahor and replace Sanchez and Sinclair with De Laet, Morrison, Jedinak, Wells and Hernandez #avfc

In other Aston Villa transfer news, this player could be about to become a Villa superstar.
