On the eve of the new Premier League season, Football Insider predicts who will win the Premier League, who will get close but not quite close enough, who will go down and who will emerge as champions of Europe. We also cast our eyes over Europe’s other big leagues.
Champions: Arsenal. But only if they are successful in signing Karim Benzema from Real Madrid. If not, Chelsea, who have a stronger team as it currently stands.
Runners-up: Chelsea (see above). It will require all Jose Mourinho’s tactical and psychological strengths to push them over the line again after an underwhelming transfer window.
Third: Manchester United. Beefed up and refurbished, but they have struggled to recruit the elite forward they so desperately need and David de Gea’s shoes are big ones to fill.
Fourth: Manchester City. The weaknesses of last season have not been rectified. It is unlikely whether Aguero and his attacking cohorts can compensate for the problem central defence and central midfield positions.
FA Cup: Chelsea
League Cup: Tottenham
Champions League: Barcelona
Europa League: Liverpool
La Liga: Barcelona
Serie A: Juventus
Bundesliga: Bayern Munich
Ligue 1: PSG
