He once spent a barren loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, but West Ham should take a serious look at Anthony Modeste this summer, who is currently ripping up the German Bundesliga with Koln.

Modeste failed to score in just nine games with Rovers during a miserable loan spell when he was a part of their 2012 relegation from the top flight.

He was shown a straight red card in a pivotal 3-0 loss to West Brom and at the end of the season he was sent straight back to his parent club Bordeaux with Blackburn keen to wipe their hands of him once and for all.

It wasn’t the ideal loan move though for the French striker as in his time in Lancashire he was forced to play on both wings, away from his regular role as the focal point of attacks.

West Ham should be frustrated with constantly having to nurse the fitness of Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho and look for a striker who can score consistently, as well as play more than a handful of games a season.

On Saturday, Modeste bagged a stunning hat-trick for Koln against Hertha Berlin in a brilliant 4-2 victory to bring his league tally for the season up to a stunning 22 goals from just 25 games.

After last weekend’s action, the 28-year-old is in good company at the top of the Bundesliga goalscoring charts.

Only Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has more than him this season with 23 league goals to his name.

He has scored more than the world-class Robert Lewandowski, the ever-energetic Javier Hernandez and the experienced target man that is Mario Gomez.

Blackburn was a long time ago and Modeste has proved that in a pretty average side he can help elevate them to sixth in the table just by his goals alone – think about what he could do in a side containing Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini and Robert Snodgrass.

The Hammers dream of continental football and despite their poor showing in the Europa League this season, a striker like Modeste is a sure-fire way of getting the goals they need.
