When you look at Aston Villa’s season as a whole it makes for bleak reading, but among all the chaos there has been a shining light in Idrissa Gueye.
As Tottenham once again step up their pursuit for Southampton midfield anchorman Victor Wanyama, they may be missing out on a bargain in the little Frenchman based in the Midlands.
There is no doubt that Wanyama will fetch for a higher price even though the 24-year-old has only a year remaining on his contract.
But Gueye, who is known as ‘Gana’ by supporters, has a £7.1million release clause in his contract, cited by the Daily Mail, and the London club should consider triggering it.
Gana’s individual stats were remarkable for the 2015/16 season, this despite a humiliating relegation for his club to the Championship.
The 26-year-old made 108 tackles and 140 interceptions this season, second in the entire Premier League behind only N’Golo Kante, who made 125 tackles and 156 interceptions as his side went onto lift the trophy.
As a result, Gana made four tackles and 4.1 interceptions per game compared to 3.1 and 2.3 respectively by Wanyama.
The Claret & Blue club’s season may be of a deterrent to potential buyers, but Gana’s work rate, alongside Eric Dier’s reading of the game could be of a good pairing for the North London club as they plan for another assault on the Premier League in the coming season.
The Senegalese midfielder also has experience in Europe with his former club Lille, with whom he made over 100 appearances for, but in today’s game a price of just over £7million is not much of a gamble.
In other Tottenham Hotspur news, former Manchester United striker claims Liverpool man is a much better player than Harry Kane.
