Rudi Garcia is confident that his former midfielder Idrissa Gueye will become a Premier League “great” after a superb start at Everton.

The 27-year-old moved to Merseyside after a dismal introduction to English football with Aston Villa, as they were relegated from England’s top flight with just 17 points.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, former Lille boss Garcia believes that Gueye will be a huge success because of his work ethic and determination.

“The way to become a Premier League great is long and hard,” Garcia told the Liverpool Echo. “But Idrissa is a hard worker so he will improve his level every season. I am sure of that.

“Idrissa was very young when he was at Lille but he already had many qualities. He was a good, strong midfielder with a big capacity to run, a fantastic fighter and a very good man.”

Former Roma boss Garcia worked with Gueye at French outfit Lille, giving him his chance and promoting the Senegal international to the first team.

Following his £7million move to the Toffees, Gueye has made an instant impact by becoming first choice in Ronald Koeman’s centre-midfield alongside Gareth Barry, pushing the likes of James McCarthy, Muhamed Besic and Darren Gibson aside.

However, the Toffees must do without their new star signing, as he is set to jet off to represent Senegal in the African Cup of Nations in January.

Everton next face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on October 15, as the Premier League pauses to make way for the international break.

In other Everton news, Kevin Mirallas has made this bold prediction and named the player that will help most to achieve it.
