Dwight Gayle has spelled out his ambitions ahead of his first season at Newcastle

The striker arrived on Tyneside last Friday after completing a £10million move from Crystal Palace.

The 25-year-old goal-scorer played just 20 times in all competitions in the 2015-16 season for the Eagles and scored seven goals and provided one assist.

But he is keen to triple that tally next season in the Championship.

“You want to get to the 20 mark and that’s the first stage you want to get to,” Gayle told the Croydon Advertiser. “You go into each game trying to score but the main aim is just to get promoted.

“If you’d have told me I’d be signing for Newcastle…I’d probably have laughed and told you were a liar, but to finally be here, on the route I’ve come, is a great achievement. I just want to crack on now, perform, and get the goals to push the club back up.”

Newcastle fans will be hoping the forward can offset the loss of the attacking threat provided by Andros Townsend as the Toon push for an immediate return to the Championship.

Gayle will hope to forge a partnership with Aleksandar Mitrovic to bring the goals needed to make sure the Magpies are playing Premier League football in the 2017-18 season.

In other Newcastle news, Toon boss Rafael Benitez has told fans that the club do not need to sell any players this summer.
