Graham Roberts believes Tottenham have the best defence in the country – even without star centre-back Toby Alderweireld.
The former Spurs player made the shock claim after Mauricio Pochettino’s side earned a 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.
Spurs went behind after Kevin Wimmer inadvertently put the ball into his own net at the end of the first half, but equalised through a Harry Kane penalty after Mousa Dembele was bundled over by Laurent Koscielny.
Pochettino’s new-look three man backline severely tested by the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott but held firm to deny the Gunners all three points.
Roberts, who played for Spurs between 1980 and 1986, claimed on his personal Twitter account that Spurs have the “best defence in the country” even without Alderweireld.
Roberts’ sensational claim comes despite Chelsea keeping two more clean sheets in the Premier League, while Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City each spent more than £30million on a centre-back during the summer.
Along with Austria international Wimmer, Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose all performed well at Emirates Stadium in front of Ballon d’Or nominee Hugo Lloris.
To the delight of Spurs fans, star striker Kane scored his third Premier League goal of the season after returning to the side following an ankle injury that has kept him out of action for almost two months.
The point against Arsenal means that their arch enemies means they do not lose ground in the hunt for the 2016-17 Premier League title, but now sit four points off league leaders Chelsea after they demolished Everton 5-0.
