Emre Can has given Liverpool a major scare after reportedly leaving Anfield with his foot in a brace following the team’s sensational win over Borussia Dortmund.

Can played 80 minutes of the 4-3 win over Dortmund on Thursday night as the Merseysiders came from 3-1 down in the second half to seal one of the greatest fightbacks in European history.

The German midfielder did not appear to be in significant pain when he was replaced by Lucas Leiva, jogging to the touchline before being embraced by manager Jurgen Klopp.

But the 22-year-old  was said by a Liverpool Echo reporter on Twitter to have left the stadium on crutches amid fears he has suffered a serious injury.

Can has established himself as Liverpool’s first-choice midfielder under Klopp this season, starting 42 matches in all competitions, a record bettered in the squad only by Simon Mignolet (47) and Nathaniel Clyne (45).

The Merseysiders have a crucial month ahead that will determine whether they end an increasingly encouraging season with silverware.

In addition to the seven matches remaining of their Premier League programme, there is also the Europa League two-legged semi-final tie, which is due to be played on 28 April and 5 May.

In other Liverpool news, Dele Alli has revealed why he overlooked the Merseysiders to join Tottenham.
