Sky Sports pundit Ian Holloway has backed Aston Villa to earn their first win since February when they take on Rotherham on Saturday.

The TV pundit and former manager has backed the Villa players to make themselves counted after a horror showing away at Luton on Wednesday night.

Roberto Di Matteo’s side suffered defeat in the EFL Cup at the hands of the fourth-tier opposition, but despite losing their Championship opener beforehand, Holloway has backed Villa to win this weekend.

“I was among the Villa travelling support at Sheffield Wednesday and they were brilliant,” Holloway wrote in his Sky Sports column.  “The players now need to start playing like the fans would if given the chance.

“But it’s going to be really tough to turn that losing mentality around. They are so fragile at the moment and when they concede a goal, they go to pieces.

“They need to stand up and be counted, and it needs to start against Rotherham.”

Holloway has predicted the Midlands club to finish 16th this season, which infuriated the club’s owner Tony Xia.

The 53-year-old is well aware of what is required to win promotion after success with Blackpool and most recently Crystal Palace in 2012-13.

Di Matteo will be hoping for instant promotion to the Premier League, but his task has been made even harder after the opening defeats for his side.

In other Aston Villa team news, this midfielder is heading to a Premier League club.
