Mauro Icardi’s wife Wanda Nara has revealed that the striker rejected a £21million-a-year salary offered by a Chinese club last week.
But Nara kept alive Tottenham’s hopes of signing the spearhead by hitting out again at his club Inter Milan.
Icardi’s wife, who is also the player’s agent, believes the Argentine should be on a higher wage given the club’s valuation of him has tripled over the last year.
The Inter captain bagged 16 goals and four assists in Serie A for the Italian giants in 2015-16, but was left out out of the highly competitive Argentina squad for this summer’s Copa America.
“I am disappointed. One year ago, Mauro was worth £16.9million,” Nara told Italian website Calciomercato.com. “We have refused many offers to remain at Inter. If now, his valuation is three times more, it means that we deserve the salary augmentation that Inter promised last year.
“Everybody is asking why every year Icardi is asking for more money. Okay. Then why Inter one year ago evaluated him £16.9million and now they could ask for £50.6million?
“If Mauro was thinking about the money only, then one week ago we would have accepted the £21million-a-year contract offered by a Chinese club.”
Despite Icardi rejecting the mutli-million offer from Asia, it is clear that a move to north London could still be on the cards for the attacker.
His wife added to Calciomercato: “Of course, if somebody will offer £42million to Inter, he will consider the possibility to leave.”
Spurs are looking to add to their striker ranks this summer as boss Mauricio Pochettino aims to take the goal scoring burden off England international Harry Kane, who scored 28 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions in the recently completed season.
Fans will be hoping Pochettino can complete the signing having already missed out on Michy Batshuayi to Chelsea this summer.
Inter have recently been taken over by Chinese investors and it is believed that the side are waiting to see the value of any offer of their 23-year-old striker before evaluating the deal with the new owners.
The Nerazzuri captain has been linked with all of Europe’s heavyweights this summer but the Spurs boss is believed to be willing to throw a big chunk of his transfer budget on his fellow countryman, who has three years remaining on his current deal.
