Gabriel Agbonlahor has posted various pictures on his official Instagram account of him looking leaner and fitter ahead of Aston Villa’s pre-season programme.
The disgraced Villa striker, who stood down as club captain months ago after being ordered to attend a fitness camp to get in shape, appears to be working his way back to fitness ahead of new manager Roberto Di Matteo’s first campaign.
The Birmingham Mail reported on his photos, where the 29-year-old posted “Treadmill Sprints” alongside a picture of him looking exhausted.
Agbonlahor scored only one Premier League goal in the recent domestic season, as his side suffered a humiliating relegation to the second-tier of English football for the first time in nearly three decades.
As a result, Agbonlahor was put on a fitness regime at the back end of the campaign and stepped down as club captain after making the front pages of tabloid newspapers for a series of controversies.
The Midlands club begin their Championship season away at Sheffield Wednesday, as new manager Di Matteo and new owner Tony Xia begin rebuilding the club.
The former England international has been at Villa since 1994, when he joined them aged eight and is now entering the final year of his contract with the club struggling to offload him on the wage bill.
Villa scored a league low of 27 goals last season, as they finished rock bottom of the Premier League with 17 points and Di Matteo will be looking to boyhood Villa fan Agbonlahor as inspiration in getting the club back where it belongs.
