Jack Wilshere has claimed that Petr Cech is an upgrade on David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny.

The veteran goalkeeper has pushed Colombian Ospina down the pecking order at Emirates Stadium, while Szczesny is on a season-long loan at Roma.

Arsenal midfielder Wilshere, who is recovering from an ankle injury that has sidelined him all season, paid tribute to the impact of Cech following his £11million transfer from Chelsea in the summer.

“It is a massive signing,” explained Wilshere. “I think John Terry said he will get you 12 to 15 points a season. You’ve seen that against Bayern he was brilliant and kept us in the game.

“If you’re going to win the league, you need a top ‘keeper like that. Sometimes, when you don’t play well you need your keeper. If he can pull out the saves he made against Bayern, and even yesterday [against Everton] at the end, he is going to get us a lot of points.”

Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday evening has propelled to the top of the Premier League, although Manchester City will reclaim first place if they win Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Asked if Arsenal are better placed to win the League than in previous season, Wilshere replied:  “Yes, I think so. In past seasons we struggled at the start of the season and then woke up in January when we realised we needed to get into the top four and into the Champions League.

“But this season we’ve continued where we finished last season and have players in there now who want to win and fight for each other. There’s a great team spirit. If we can continue this, then who knows? We’ve got to take each game as it comes but we’re feeling good at the moment and everyone is confident.”
