Dwight Gayle has been given the Championship Player of the Month award for October, to the delight of his Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The striker was in sensational form throughout October, scoring four goals in four games with two braces against Brentford and Barnsley.

Toon captain Jamaal Lascelles reacted on his personal Twitter account to the news, declaring that the former Crystal Palace forward “deserved” the award.

Gayle has kept the likes of Toon hotshots Aleksander Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy out of the starting 11, after scoring a hugely impressive 11 goals in 13 league and cup appearances.

The form of the summer signing has also seen highly-rated youngster Adam Armstrong move on loan to Championship rivals Barnsley, instead of trying to break into Rafa Benitez’s side.

The 26-year-old has missed the last two Newcastle games after picking up a calf strain, but could be set to return to the side to face Cardiff on Saturday at St. James’ Park.

Captain Lascelles has been hugely impressed with the form of the £10million summer signing, who has helped propel the Magpies to the top of the Championship following a sticky start.
