Liverpool gave another stunning attacking performance in their 2-1 win against West Brom on Saturday, but pundit and former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher believes the fans should be thanking a defender for the three points.
Liverpool were cruising at 2-0 after goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho, but they conceded from a corner in the 81st minute and Gareth McAuley’s goal gave West Brom hope of salvaging a draw.
They had another chance in the 87th minute when the ball dropped to Nacer Chadli but his shot was well blocked by Dejan Lovren.
Jamie Carragher made mention of this on his personal Twitter account on Saturday evening, acknowledging Coutinho’s “outstanding” contribution but stating that Lovren had effectively won the three points.

Liverpool’s defence has been criticised this season after only recording one clean sheet in nine games, in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United.
However, they have made a strong start to the season under Klopp’s new system and have scored 20 goals already, with the attacking three of Mane, Coutinho and Roberto Firmino linking up well.
Liverpool host Tottenham next in the EFL Cup on Tuesday before continuing their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park next Saturday.
In other Liverpool news, BBC pundit Mark Schwarzer has said that defending from set pieces is Liverpool’s Achilles heel.
