Jamie Redknapp believes that Toby Alderweireld is the “standout” player at Tottenham.
The defender has established himself as the first-choice centre-back under Mauricio Pochettino and impressed against Manchester City on Sunday.
Spurs completed a 2-0 victory against the Premier League leaders and are now considered serious title contenders, boasting the only unbeaten record in the division.
Alderweireld, 27, has been a key part of the club’s impressive start and has helped them to second in the table.
Former England international Redknapp told Sky Sports that he is impressed by Alderweireld and believes he has helped make team-mate Jan Vertonghen eve better.
“The one player that always seems to stand out for me though is Alderweireld, I’m such a big fan of his, I think he’s unbelievable,” Redknapp said. “Even before he came here I looked at the Tottenham back four and looked at Vertonghen and thought yeah nice player.
“When he plays alongside Alderweireld he looks like he has a bit of a nasty streak to him, he goes into tackles, he wants to win.
“Alderwerield bosses that back four, he’s like the manager on the pitch for Pochettino. He’s been such a good signing.”
Alderweireld moved to White Hart Lane in 2015 from Atletico Madrid and has built a strong partnership alongside compatriot Vertonghen.
The pair have both been included in Belguim’s latest squad and are a part of the best defence in the Premier League this season.
Spurs have conceded just three goals from their opening seven games and Alderweireld has played every minute at the heart of the defence.
He enjoyed a successful loan spell at Southampton in the 2014/15 season and has developed into one of the best defender in England.
