Juan Mata has singled out Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez as the two biggest Leicester threats ahead of Manchester United’s top-of-the-table clash against the Premier League leaders.

In his weekly United blog, the midfield maestro set out United’s intentions to claim top spot from Leicester when they travel to the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

United sit one point behind Leicester in the table and Mata identified the two players his side have to watch and must keep quiet.

“In particular Vardy (who has equalled Van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive games) and Mahrez are outstanding, playing at an exceptional level,” Mata wrote. “We will have to be very careful with them.”

Between them Vardy and Mahrez have bagged 20 of Leicester’s 28 Premier League goals this season, and the attacking duo have been the driving forces behind the team’s unexpected climb to the summit.

Unstoppable: Vardy tops the Premier League goal charts with 13 from 13 games

Vardy equalled the record of Ruud van Nistelrooy when he scored for the 10th consecutive Premier League match in Leicester’s 3-0 over Newcastle last Saturday, and will go one better than the Dutch maestro if he finds the net against the meanest defence in the top-flight.

But after snatching a late 2-1 away win at Watford last weekend, Mata is confident United will knock the Foxes off their perch, as well as defeat PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

“We’re feeling optimistic, as always, and our goal is to win both games and to have the best possible start to the busy period ahead.

” Obviously it’s going to be tough, and we will need to be at our highest level to beat PSV and Leicester.”
