Jurgen Klopp has stated Mamadou Sakho does not need to gain his trust and insisted the Liverpool defender needs to get back to full fitness if he wants to compete for a first-team place.
The 26-year-old was sent home by his club manager during pre-season after he turned up late on three occasions.
The BBC reported that the Merseyside club were willing to let the centre-back go out on loan, but Klopp has now said where he stands with Sakho.
“It is not a problem. He doesn’t have to gain my trust,” said Klopp as quoted by the BBC.
It is said Sakho turned down moves to Premier League rivals Stoke and West Brom during the summer transfer window.
But, Klopp revealed the Reds defender needs to get back to full fitness after a summer of disruption through injuries and suspensions.
“He couldn’t play football for a long time,” said Klopp. “Now it is about making Mama fit – which he isn’t after this long time with suspension and injury – and we will see what happens.
“I have no idea what happens when because it is who plays how, who performs when, our results. At the end Mama knows and I know and from my side that is enough.”
Sakho has not featured for Klopp’s side this season, but did make 34 appearances in all competitions last term before being involved in a doping case which was dismissed by UEFA in July.
The France international will have to compete for a place with summer signings Joel Matip, and Ragnar Klavan, along with Dejan Lovren, who has featured in three Premier League games this season.
