Jurgen Klopp has urged Joao Teixeira to sign a new contract and become a Liverpool star.

The Portugese winger gave notice of his potential with a fine display and his first goal for the club as the Merseysiders beat Exeter 3-0 in their FA Cup replay on Wednesday night.

Teixeira, 23, is in talks with Liverpool over a new contract but has not yet reached an agreement as the possibility grows that he could leave Anfield when his current deal expires in the summer.

The former Portugal Under-21 international had an impressive loan spell at Brighton last season but has made only three appearances for the Liverpool first team.

Manager Klopp is in doubt that he would like Teixeira to commit to a new deal at Anfield.

Speaking at his post-match media conference on Wednesday, Klopp said: “I would like to work longer with Teixeira. We are always in talks, we’ll have to see. Sometimes you have to leave but maybe not Joao.”

Teixeira’s team-mate Jerome Sinclair is set to leave Liverpool this month after growing frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities at Anfield.

Like the Portugese, Sinclair is out of contract in the summer and he is now in talks with Watford about a transfer in the January window.
