Rangers captain Lee Wallace has admitted he is nervously looking over his shoulder following the signing of Declan John.

The 22-year-old joined the Light Blues on deadline day on a season-long loan from Cardiff City and will provide competition for Wallace at left-back in Caixinha’s new-look squad.

Wallace has been Rangers’ first-choice left-back since 2012 and the Rangers skipper spoke highly of one-time Welsh international John at his media conference at Ibrox.

“He is a bright young player, he wants to play football and had aspirations to get back in the Wales team which is great,” Wallace said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.

Wallace also revealed that having added competition at left-back will motivate him as he aims to help Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title for the first time since 2011.

Lee Hodson and Myles Beerman have filled in at left-back over the last year but neither player looked likely to push Wallace for a regular place but Wallace says can only help the team, telling the media: “You know there is someone hanging over your shoulder waiting to come in which is great for the team and motivates you.”

John wasn’t involved last weekend as Rangers thrashed Dundee 4-1 at Ibrox but could take some part in Friday’s trip to Firhill to face Partick Thistle in the league.

The on-loan Welshman can also play as a left winger facing competition from Josh Windass and Niko Kranjcar, however, Windass’ fantastic performance against Dundee as a second-half substitute means he is likely to get the nod.

John came through Cardiff’s Academy and made his first-team debut in 2012. playing in the Premier League for the Bluebirds, but became a bit-part player under current boss Neil Warnock.

His contract ends at the end of the season and Rangers could look to sign him on a permanent deal if he impresses.
