Leeds are interested in signing Omonia Nicosia forward Matt Derbyshire, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claim that Whites manager Thomas Christiansen could attempt to bring the 31-year-old to Elland Road in the summer.

It is understood that the recently appointed Leeds boss wanted to sign the striker at his former side Apoel Nicosia, but “the deal proved too difficult given the rivalry between the biggest two teams in Cyprus”.

The report details that the Yorkshire giants could now enter the race for Derbyshire and face competition from Greek club Panthanaikos for his signature.

Derbyshire impressed last season for Omonia in the top flight of Cyprus football and scored 26 goals across all competitions.

The forward was in prolific form in front of goal and helped them to fifth in their league table, while also playing in the Europa League qualifying rounds.

He is no stranger to English football and could be offered a return to his homeland by Leeds.

The former England Under-21 international has previously played for the likes of Blackburn, Rotherham, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham during his career.

Derbyshire has experience in both the Premier League and Championship in the past, scoring 10 goals in 76 appearances in the top flight.

Football Insider verdict:

Christiansen will be keen to bolster his squad following his arrival at Leeds and the frontline is certainly an need area that can be improved. Chris Wood was too heavily relied upon last season for the main source of goals and the Whites need some genuine back-up options to him. Christiansen was impressed by the performances of Derbyshire in Cyprus last season and he did have a great strike record. The striker also has vast experience in England and would take no time adapting to the style. He may not be the big-name forward that some Leeds fans are crying out for, but he could provide a genuine alternative option in attack. Leeds should continue to keep Wood as their frontline attacker, but Derbyshire could be a great second choice.
