Aston Villa have beaten Leeds to the signing of Tommy Elphick – and supporters of the Yorkshire club were not surprise.

Football Insider reported last week that Leeds were ready to hijack Villa’s swoop  for the Bournemouth defender.

But Villa announced on their website on Monday night that they had secured the first signing of the Roberto Di Matteo era.

It has been reported that the Midlands club will pay £3million for the centre-back, who captained Bournemouth to two promotions from League One to the Premier League in the space of three seasons. However he was hampered by an ankle injury in the recently completed domestic season and made only 14 appearances for the Premier League side.

Bournemouth reportedly offered Elphick an extension to his existing deal at Vitality Stadium but the length of the new contract was a sticking point for the player.

Many Leeds fans have expressed their disappointment on missing out on the experienced defender, who would have strengthened a key area.

The Championship club will have to continue in the hunt for a new centre-back as they step up plans to strengthen their squad.

In other Leeds news, Garry Monk is ready to start his rebuild of the team by selling a senior player and recruiting a replacement from the Premier League.
