Leeds must nullify the threat of Dwight Gayle on Sunday when they go head-to-head with Rafa Benitez’ high-flying Newcastle side in the Championship.
Garry Monk’s sixth-placed side have been in good form recently and go into the important league fixture on the back of a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Norwich prior to the international break.
However, Newcastle have been formidable so far this season and Dwight Gayle has been at the centre of all things positive for the league leaders so far.
The striker has already netted 11 league goals in 12 appearances this season but it’s the number of shots he has on goal that Leeds need to be wary of.
So far this season, he’s hit 17 strikes on target in the league and a further 22 off target so it’s no surprise he’s the team’s current top scorer in the Championship.
The 26-year-old has been a threat in each of his last nine starts for Newcastle and has notched up 12 appearances in the Championship already this season.
He’s scored seven goals in his last five Championship appearances, which is hugely impressive and he picked up the man of the match award in all three victories against Nowich, Brentford and Barnsley.
Gayle’s emphatic form has coincided with Newcastle’s rise to the top of the table and his hat-trick display in the 4-3 victory against Norwich was almost a one-man show.
He has the ability to change games in a moment and he will undoubtedly be a threat for Newcastle. Leeds will have to keep him quiet and not give him the space he craves in front of goal if they hope to get a result.
