Leeds are preparing to appoint Francesco Marroccu as their new director of football, according to a report.
The Mail claim the Italian has been attending training at Thorp Arch every day and watching manager Garry Monk put the players through their paces.
He has yet to be officially appointed but it is said that Leeds are confident of unveiling Marroccu in the sporting director role that has been vacant since Nicola Salerno departed the club a year ago.
Marroccu had been working in a similar capacity at Ascoli but left that role in June following the end of his contract.
He has previously worked under Leeds owner Massimo Cellino at Cagliari and was linked with Leeds last summer. Cellino has openly admitted plans to appoint another recruitment guru.
Cellino’s Eleanora Sports last week took full control of Leeds United by buying up the remaining shares held by Middle Eastern bank GFH Capital.
Supporters have called for greater continuity under Cellino with Monk the seventh manager to work for the Italian since he took over Leeds in 2014.
Monk, 37, is regarded as one of the brightest young managers in the game and, despite a poor start to the season that continued with Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield, has strong support from the Elland Road faithful.
In other Leeds news, fans have reacted on Twitter to Monk’s key decisions against Huddersfield.
