Leicester City youngster Demarai Gray believes that the current PFA Player of the Year is too much of a professional to have his head turned by a possible move to Arsenal.
Mahrez grabbed a goal in the International Champions Cup for Leicester on Saturday after he completed a trademark run inside a defender, before curling the ball inside the far post with his left foot.
“There is a lot of speculation around him but he doesn’t seem bothered by any of that,” Gray told the Express. “He works hard and he’s a Leicester player. We’ll just do what he does, train and focus on games.
“He was the Player of the Year and we won the League, so you expect speculation but he is a great professional and concentrates on what he does and contributes to the team, as you saw against Celtic. It’s not really bothering him.”
The Algerian international was the standout performer for the Premier League champions in their title triumph last season with 17 league goals and 10 assists, while forming a highly productive partnership with Jamie Vardy.
He joined from Le Havre, who play in the French Ligue 2, midway through the 2013-14 season and helped Leicester earn a return to the Premier League.
Mahrez is set to travel with the rest of his Leicester team-mates to California for a pre-season match against PSG and speculation about his future looks set to continue. Ironically, Arsenal are also heading to California for a pre-season game against MLS All-Stars on Friday.
Arsene Wenger has managed to strengthen his squad this summer, bringing in youngsters Rob Holding and Takuma Asano, as well as Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Wenger has told ESPN FC that he is prepared to make a big signing if the opportunity arises.
