Liverpool Under-23s coach Michael Beale compared Brooks Lennon to Danny Ings after his standout performance against Everton for the development team.

The USA youth international has struggled to feature in many games under Beale this season but marked his return to the starting XI with a headed goal in the 2-0 derby win.

The 19 year-old has been deployed in a number of positions for club and country in the past but Beale has made it clear he wants to use Lennon as a number nine at Liverpool.

The Premier League B team coach was thrilled with Lennon’s performance against Everton and spoke of the benefits of learning from Ings.

“We asked Brooks to put in a Danny Ings-esque performance in terms of energy – that willingness to chase lost causes,” Michael Beales told the Liverpool Echo.

“What a lesson it’s been for Brooks watching Danny in recent weeks. I was really pleased with him. Brooks was outstanding with super energy.”

A Liverpool reserve team missing a number of senior players moved up into second place in the table with the derby triumph.

Ings did not feature as he’s expected to play a major role in Liverpool’s first team EFL Cup fixture against Tottenham on Tuesday evening.

Ovie Ejaria, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart and Divock Origi are also expecting to line up against Tottenham in the mid-week clash.

In other Liverpool news, Steven Gerrard should only feature as a squad player if he returns amid speculation his LA Galaxy career has come to an end.
