Norwich have beaten Liverpool and Tottenham to the £3.5million signing of Coventry midfielder James Maddison in a last-gasp deadline day swoop.

The two Premier League big hitters had made enquiries for the 19-year-old Englishman with a view to signing him this month and loaning him back to the east Midlands club for the rest of the season.

But Norwich have snatched him from under the noses of Liverpool and Tottenham in a genuine coup for Alex Neil’s team.

The 19-year-old has been bought for a fee worth up to £3,5million and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal before being loaned back to the League One club for the rest of the campaign.

Tottenham did a similar deal with Milton Keynes Dons a year ago for Dele Alli, and it proved to have huge benefits for both parties.

Maddison has caught the eye with his performances this season in Coventry’s midfield. He has been used principally in attacking midfield by the club, although he can also play in central midfield.

In 30 appearances for the third-tier outfit since breaking into the team last season, Maddison has scored four goals and supplied five assists.
