Liverpool centre-backs Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip both scored during their 4-2 victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday, and it was the first time that has happened in in the league in 48 years.

The last time both centre-backs scored in the league for the Reds was in 1968, in a 4-0 win over Leicester City, the Liverpool Echo revealed.

It is not the first time Lovren has scored alongside his centre-back partner, though. Lovren and Mamadou Sakho both scored in Liverpool’s dramatic Europa League quarter-final victory against Borussia Dortmund last season.

Lovren was at fault for Palace’s first equaliser when his hesitation gifted James McArthur an opportunity to score.

However, the former Southampton defender made up for his mistake immediately afterwards, beating Scott Dann in the air to head home Liverpool’s second goal.

Matip rounded-off a first-half thriller, scoring Liverpool’s third and the game’s fifth shortly before the half-time break.

The last two defenders to score for the Reds in a league match were centre-backs Ron Yeats and Tommy Smith, who scored in the opening four minutes of the game against Leicester.

Lovren and Matip’s goals were not as quick as those of the former Anfield legends, but Matip’s debut goal means Liverpool have now had 12 different goalscorers so far this season, including a third centre-back, Ragnar Klavan.
