Liverpool have entered the race to sign highly-rated Premier League defender Michael Keane, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim that the Merseyside club have joined Everton, Manchester City and Leicester in the hunt for the future England star.
Keane, 24, has been one of the stars of the show for Burnley in their quest to retain their Premier League status this term, and has attracted interest from a number of England’s elite sides.
However, Liverpool have suffered from continued defensive problems over the course of the season, and will need to spend the necessary money in the summer transfer market to address their chief problem area.
Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have both endured lengthy spells on the sidelines, forcing Jurgen Klopp to deploy Lucas Leiva as a centre-back alongside an unconvincing Ragnar Klavan.
But the German chief can make amends in the summer by moving to sign one of England’s next big talents in Keane.
The former Manchester United defender has been ever-present for Burnley this term, making 33 appearances in all competitions for the club.
Burnley have struggled to keep clean sheets this term, but Keane’s impressive displays have helped the club establish an eight point cushion above the relegation zone with nine games to go.
Football Insider verdict
Even if Burnley avoid the drop this season, it will be difficult for them to keep hold of Keane. The defender is fast becoming the next big English defender, and is almost certain to make the step up to one of the Premier League’s top clubs. However, none need a proven PL defender quite like Liverpool, and Klopp should be doing everything he can to ensure it is Liverpool that win the race for his signature. Klopp has narrowed his search to foreign talent of late, with trio Loris Karius, Matip and Klavan all joining from abroad last summer, but he should look much closer to home for this one.
In other Liverpool transfer news, Stan Collymore believes the club should cash-in on this attacker in the summer.
