Georginio Wijnaldum is expected to be restored to the Liverpool side against Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp is set to make two changes to his team as Dutch midfielder Wijnaldum replaces the injured Adam Lallana.

Dejan Lovren is also expected to be restored in defence ahead of Lucas, with the former missing the 6-1 demolition of Watford before the international break with a virus.

Lallana, 28, was forced off for England on Tuesday in the 2-2 draw with Spain in a friendly.

The Liverpool Echo claim the midfielder “is unlikely to be risked against his former club” after picking up a “minor groin injury”.

Jurgen Klopp has not ruled out Lallana from the game and is hopeful he can return, but the club are awaiting the results of a scan.

The Reds will be looking to extend their one-point lead at the top of the Premier League and continue a run of four wins in all competitions, when they face an away encounter at Southampton.

Klopp will have his favoured defensive players at his disposal against Southampton and Loris Karius is set to continue in goal ahead of Simon Mignolet.

Lovren is expected to return alongside powerful centre-back Joel Matip in defence and they will be flanked by England pairing James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne in the full-back positions.

The Merseyside club have not kept a clean sheet in the last four games and will be looking to improve their defence.

Liverpool are expected to field a midfield trio of Wijnaldum, Emre Can and captain Jordan Henderson, with in-form attacker Lallana likely to miss his first Premier League game of the season.

The Reds’ attacking trio has picked itself this season and Sadio Mane will have the opportunity to play against the team he left in the summer transfer window.

He will be supported by Brazilian duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, to complete the league’s most feared attackers at this moment in time.
