Jurgen Klopp is looking to strengthen his defence in January and is eying up a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that despite the form of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, Liverpool will look to shore up their defence further in a bid to land their first ever Premier League title.
Jonathan Tah, 20, has impressed for the Bundesliga team since joining them in a £7million deal from Hamburg in the summer of 2015.
He has made 60 appearances across all competitions, and has already won two caps for Germany, most recently in the 2-0 win against Finland in August.
He’s under contract with the German giants until 2020 and it would be tough to get them to sell in the January window.
The Mirror quote Rudi Voller, Leverkusen’s sporting director as saying, “Jonathan belongs to a new generation of centre-backs who are very good footballers.”
Lucas Leiva played at centre-back in Liverpool’s last Premier League game against Watford, after Dejan Lovren picked up a virus.
He got the nod ahead of Ragnar Klavan in only his second Premier League start of the season.
Liverpool won the game easily, smashing Watford 6-1, and Klopp will be very happy with his side’s attacking prowess as they sit on top of the league with 30 goals scored – the most of any side this season.
However, his side have only kept one clean sheet in the Premier League this season, in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United, and it’s an area Klopp will be looking to improve in the second half of the campaign.
