As the possibility grows that Lucas Leiva is set to leave Liverpool after nearly a decade, supporters have taken to Twitter to profess their appreciation for the midfielder’s loyalty.
Lucas joined Liverpool in 2007 from Gremio, at a time when Rafa Benitez was the manager at Anfield, and he has since become the Merseysiders’ longest-serving player.
On Monday afternoon, Football Insider reported Besiktas’ plans to sign the Brazilian and that he was open to the transfer.
Turkish newspaper Fanatik claim Besiktas have made contact with Liverpool about the 29-year-old just a week after he admitted he could leave the club this summer.
He started just eight times in the league after the turn of the year and he admitted he may find opportunities more limited as Klopp adds to his squad.
On Twitter, Liverpool fans largely took their hands off to the servant – with just one or two happy to see the back of a player who has been the point of blame on a number of occasions.
Here are a selection of the messages:
I'd be sad to see Lucas leave. Has been a good player for us for such a long time, shame injuries held him back. #LFC

Lucas looks set to leave #LFC in search of game time. Nothing but love for the man personally.

Lucas to Besiktas looks like a goer. Always been a quiet Lucas advocate quite honestly. #LFC

Would be upset if we let Lucas go. He is a great locker room presence and loves Liverpool. Always played for the badge.

@MelwoodDaily I believe he is th only current player who really bleeds for the badge ATM

@RoryGreenfield shame Lucas doesn't have the quality to match his passion. He'll be missed but not on the pitch.
