Juan Mata was named on the bench against Liverpool – and the club’s supporters were thrilled with his omission on Twitter.

The Manchester United midfielder has been left out of the starting XI for the highly anticipated Premier League clash at Anfield on Monday night.

Mata, 28, has a great history of playing against Liverpool and has tormented them at both United and during his time with Chelsea.

The Spanish midfielder scored a remarkable bicycle kick for United in the 2014/15 season as they beat the Reds 2-1 at Anfield.

Liverpool supporters revealed on Twitter they were pleased with Mata’s omission after knowing how dangerous he can be.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Mata has made nine appearances under Jose Mourinho this season but misses out on a start in the crunch derby.

The Spanish international has been a trusted player since his arrival at Old Trafford and many fans feel is underrated.

He has made 117 appearances for United, scoring 31 goals and supplying 21 assists.

Liverpool have made two changes to their side with Daniel Sturridge and Emre Can being recalled to the starting XI.

Midfield pairing Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum both miss out after picking up injuries during the international break.
