Simon Mignolet kept a clean sheet on his return to the Liverpool side against Middlesbrough – and the club’s supporters were delighted with his performance.

The 28-year-old replaced Loris Karius in the starting XI on Wednesday night and helped complete a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Riverside Stadium in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp made the bold decision to drop his number one Karius after a sting of mistakes in recent weeks and hand Mignolet a chance to stake his claim for a regular starting spot.

The Belgian international was making his first league start since September and showed great composure with a number of collected crosses.

The reds face Merseyside rivals Everton on Monday night in the league and Mignolet is expected to retain his place in goal.

Liverpool fans were pleased with Mingler’s efforts against Middlesborough and feel that he should keep his place in the starting XI.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Mignolet has had to wait patiently on the bench in recent months after being dropped by Klopp, but summer signing has been unable to cement his place after several high profile errors.

He has made 159 appearance for the Reds and is an experienced shot stopper, but has often been questioned over his handling.

Liverpool are hopeful of competing for the Premier League title and moved up to second in the table with the victory against Middlesbrough, with a six-point gap behind leaders Chelsea.

Klopp will need a dependable goalkeeper for the title run-in and Mignolet looks set to be given an opportunity in the immediate future.

In other Liverpool news, their attacker is not contributing enough following the win against Middlesbrough.
