Joe Gomez is in the Liverpool squad to face Middlesbrough as he edges closer to making his long-awaited return from injury – and fans on Twitter can’t contain their excitement.
The 19-year-old defender has been out of action for over a year with anterior cruciate ligament and Achilles injuries, but is now in line to make his comeback.
The Liverpool Echo claim that Gomez has travelled with the Liverpool squad to face Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Jurgen Klopp has concerns over the fitness of current first-choice defender Dejan Lovren, and he faces a decision over whether to take the risk or give him a rest.
But fans are excited to hear that Gomez may be back in the matchday squad, and took to Twitter to weigh-in on Klopp’s selection dilemma.
Here are some of their messages:

Gomez would not be in a position to start the game given his lack of match fitness, but could be named as a substitute if Klopp were to bring in Ragnar Klavan for the injured Lovren from the bench.
The England U21 international returned to action last month, and has made four appearances for the Liverpool U23 side since making his comeback.
He played just 45 minutes of Liverpool’s U23 clash with Arsenal on Monday, as Klopp was wary of the selection issue he could have ahead of the Middlesbrough game.
If named on the bench, it will be the first time since the Merseyside derby on October 2015 that Gomez will have been named in Liverpool’s senior matchday squad. It will also be the first that the young defender would have appeared under Jurgen Klopp.
In other Liverpool team news, West Ham must target this Liverpool player in January to help them beat relegation.
