There is growing speculation Jurgen Klopp could hand a start to Alberto Moreno for Liverpool’s crunch clash against Manchester United – and fans have reacted with shock on Twitter.

The left-back has not featured for the Merseysiders since their 3-0 cup victory against Derby in September and James Milner has been deployed in the left-back position for every league game since the 4-3 defeat to Arsenal on the opening day of the campaign.

However, injuries to Giorginio Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana may have forced the German boss to jig his preferred starting XI.

The midfielders have been essential to Liverpool’s high-pressing, intense off-the-ball pressure so will be a loss during the clash with Manchester United.

Emre Can was expected to slot straight into the deep-lying midfield role alongside Jordan Henderson.

Philippe Coutinho, who has played in a central midfield role on a number of occasions, was also expected to fill the void left by Lallana, with Daniel Sturridge coming into the side and Roberto Firmino being re-deployed in a deeper role.

However, speculation circled on Twitter just hours before kick-off and fans were not excited by the prospect of their out-of-form left-back potentially starting.

James Milner may be making a return to his favoured central midfield role to make way for Moreno and it would be a shock move from the German boss.

Here is a selection of some of the messages on Twitter:

In the latest Liverpool team news, Graeme Souness claims the Reds’ players are in danger of burning themselves out too early.
