Emre Can had a poor return to the Liverpool team in their 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Monday night – and fans laid into him on Twitter.
The central midfielder started his first Premier League match of the season after injuries to Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum forced manager Jurgen Klopp to tinker with his starting XI.
Can lined up in central midfield alongside Jordan Henderson and looked rusty in the opening 45 minutes of what was a disappointing encounter.
The Germany international grew into the match after the break and came close to breaking the deadlock in the second half only to be denied by an excellent David de Gea save.
Liverpool fans were unimpressed with Can’s display and claimed it was in stark contrast to the zip and thrust that Lallana or Wijnaldum would have offered..
Here is a selection of the messages on Twitter:
I think Emre Can might still be turning by the time of the return fixture. #LFC

Gini & Lallana big misses in starting lineup, Can a bit rusty. Hope we figure out organised/defensive teams sooner rather than later #LFC

That’s the reason Can is on the bech, Wijnaldum a smarter and faster player, really missed him #LFC

Hate to say it, but Can is not good. Moving slow, taking safe easy passes. Bring on Gru! #LFC

Jurgen Klopp’s remain fourth in the table after blowing the opportunity to join leaders Manchester City at the summit. By contrast, United are in seventh.
