Gareth Southgate has revealed that Wayne Rooney will start in his first match as England boss – and Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to question the decision.
The Three Lions are preparing to face Malta at Wembley on Saturday following the departure of Sam Allardyce.
Southgate, 46, has been placed in charge with a caretaker role, but he is keeping to the rule of picking Rooney, who has been dropped by Manchester United.
The news was not received well by the Liverpool supporters, with the fans keen to see a player from their fierce rivals dropped from the national team.
Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Southgate in his presser saying it's best to start players in form for their clubs, yet Rooney is a guaranteed starter in midfield. What?

Walcott has clearly earned a start for England, but what has Rooney done to warrant a place in the team? Hes been poor all season

I was all for giving Southgate a chance.
He's had it and blown it within a week.
Time to sack him. #Rooney.

England aren't going to get any better if Rooney still starts. He's been a great player but time to go now

Why does no England manager have the balls to drop Rooney? What a joke

Rooney, 30, has made 116 appearances for England, while scoring 53 goals.
He has particularly unimpressed for his country after breaking through at Euro 2004.
After being regarded as one of the brightest prospects for the country in Portugal, scoring four goals, he has scored a total of three goals at following tournaments.
The experienced player had looked to drop back into a midfield role from his more advanced position with his career winding down, but he has unimpressed new boss Jose Mourinho and has been dropped from the United starting eleven.
Liverpool will face their fierce rivals at Anfield after the international break with the two sides currently in form.
